Kinabukasan, maagang nagising sina Mommy't Daddy.

In Memoriam

Evaswinda Delos Reyes Joya

April 05, 1933 - August 17, 2007

Nanay, our grandmother from Mom's side, was the only grandmother I knew since I was born. My Lola Letty from Dad's side passed away two days before my parents' wedding day. Since she was the only lola I knew, she was so dear to me. When I was younger and my Mom was still working, she would leave me to Nanay to look after me. Nanay cooks good food and I loved every single dish she made for me. We used to watch Valiente together, before my siesta time. She sings me lullabies in my sleep. When I'm sick, she prays for my health and helps take care of me. I used to accompany her to Baclaran on Wednesdays to hear mass. I have a lot of good memories of Nanay...

Last October 2006, they came home from New Jersey and no longer renewed their green card because Nanay wanted to settle here in Manila for good. Come November, Nanay was hospitalized in St. Luke's Medical Center because she had her right breast with a malignant cyst removed. We thought that was the end of it. Early December, she was once again brought to the hospital (this time in VRPMC, former Polymedic, in Mandaluyong), because she hadn't taken anything in two days. She got depressed about her breast operation. For two weeks, she was in and out of the hospital. Until one day, our family was surprised with a revelation. Nanay had breast cancer. Even when her right breast was removed, the cancer cells of her malignant cyst had already metastasized. We knew she already knew about it already even before she went back here in the Philippines. Her children in New Jersey were wondering why she had her operation done here in Manila when they have health benefits in the States. Only Nanay knew all the answers. January this year, our family has decided to withdraw her from hospital confinement. For one month since December, she was restless. She didn't want to see a nurse or anyone who's wearing a scrub-suit. We took her home in Pandacan with not a single apparatus attached to her, we knew it was what she wanted. The doctor told us that in her condition, she only has 3-6months left. Since day 1, we were on her side, taking care of her, trying hard to at least ease the pain she's having. Her children from the States flew here in Manila (all of them) to help take care of Nanay for a week. Each and every single day was like calvary to her. We knew she felt so much pain, and all we could do for her is to make her feel we love her and that we're not going to leave her.

Last night at 11:55pm, Tita Yvette (her caregiver), called. I was the one who picked up the phone and though I didn't ask I knew, just with the tone of her voice, that Nanay has already taken off. Minutes later, Dad emerged from the kitchen swing door, and confirmed that Nanay has passed away. I felt numb. I know it was what we've been praying for the last 8 months but it felt like I wasn't expecting it. Early that evening, while we were having dinner, I even told Mom that Tatay called that afternoon, looking for her. I told him she's not around and asked him if he has a message for Mom. He told me he's upstairs that time, not wanting the people downstairs hear him while he's on the phone. He was telling me that Nanay's very weak and that she's dying. I thought Tatay was only making kulit again, making another episode. Mom was able to talk to Nanay the night before last night and for 15 seconds, Nanay stopped breathing. She was so weak, she only managed to breathe faintly...

I know that Nanay is with the Lord now. Wherever she is, whoever she's with, I know she's in eternal happiness.

Nanay, I love you... I will miss you so... Watch over me and my family...

Yey! :p

To start with, I'm not really a fan of Spiderman. I watched the movie with my family and I must say, it wasn't bad after all. I watched the other two movies only in HBO and it's obvious that they invested much on the computer-generated effects. However, everytime Peter Parker wears the black suit, he likewise changes his image. He turns "emo" and I find it funny though a bit disappointing. Anyway, it is indeed, a blockbuster hit.

First impression: a religious flick. Wrong. Actually, when you see the movie, you will be utterly confused of the title's relevance to the plot of the story. What we (Dad & I) thought was Babel was used because there were 4 different nationalities involved in the movie, each of them are related to each scenes. [we only thought of that, we're not even sure of it. Haha]

Not ideal for kids to view this film. ABSOLUTELY NOT A GP! :))

Having diagnosed with Breast Cancer since December 2006, we never thought she'd be able to celebrate her 74th birthday like this. She knew it's her birthday. She was poised and smiling especially when we sang her "Happy Birthday", and the rest of the people in the room sang along. We are more than happy to see her in such a good mood. :)

DLA: 7th Commencement Exercises (High School)
03 April 2007
DLA Audigym

1723H

Currently here at DLA to witness my brother's HS graduation. The moment I walked in the school's premises, it felt like I'm brought to a familiar scene in a very familiar place. Sampaguita necklace. Official photographer. Corsage. Toga. Parents. Graduates. Goosebumps. The first person who walked right up to me was our very own Class Valedictorian, Carlo Trinidad (Kane to some). He obviously looked confused as to why I'm there, then he immediately realized that our brothers are batchmates like us.

1755H

We are about to begin the program in 5 minutes. May I ask everyone to settle down in their respective seats. Thank you. That was Teacher Cecille Montoya, tonight's Master of Ceremonies. I went up to the 2nd floor and found a perfect seat overlooking the stage and the rest of the crowd. On my left, a parent sets up the tripod for their videocam while two undergrads sit right next to me. Everyone was busy.

1800H

Nice. The program, indeed, began on time. Just when the background music for the graduation march was played, the processional began. Integrity. Solidarity. Sovereignty. Special Awardees. Honorable Mentions. Salutatorian. Valedictorian. There were 117 graduates. I don't know why but I was having goosebumps all over my body when I saw them march on. Is it pure excitement or is it pride I'm feeling for these kids? Like I've said, I've seen these kids grow up (literally) and become responsible teenagers especially to my brother's classmates from Grade 4-6, whom I've handled in English class where the Seniors took charge of the undergrads during Teacher's day. Among other batches, they were the dearest to me.

After the processional, I saw Kane heading his way to the bench where I was sitting. He sat beside me, smiled, and said "Grabe noh, parang kelan lang tayo yung nandyan. 3rd Commencement Exercises. Ang tatanda na natin." Though I laughed at the latter part of what he said, I also had the same realization. As a reply, I said, "Oo nga eh. Ano nga bang feeling nung nakaupo sa gitna ng stage?" matched with a teasing tone. We both laughed at that.

There were 15 students on stage. These are the Top 10% achievers of the entire class. Not surprisingly, my brother sits on stage. He receives the recognition for being the 9th honorable mention of their batch. Like the rest of the awardees, he was accompanied by our proud parents. Among us three (siblings), Roi (Butchok to a few close friends :p) was the consistent academic achiever. Never did he disappoint my parents in bringing home medals and other recognitions from school and even interschool activities/competitions. One thing that caught my attention was the blinding fact that there were more male achievers than the female ones. We had Kane and they have Nathaniel Casillan as Class Valedictorian--the only two male valedictorians in DLA's history (to date).

There were special guests invited to witness the ceremony. One was Bro. Odi, who gave a very interesting talk (it was so interesting I actually listened attentively) and a DEP-ED representative who brought with her a "surprise". The "surprise" was about the PGMA Presidential Medal of Excellence which will be awarded to 5 graduating students who excelled in the given categories. One of which is the Medal of Excellence in Literary works. At that point, Kane told me that if we had that kind of recognition back in our time, I would have gotten that award. Modesty aside, I received recognition (locally & internationally) for my poetries back in high school. Just that thought of it made me proud. But then, who knows? Well, the rest of the night (I actually lost track of the time while writing this in my tickler.) I spent talking with Kane, recalling some of the wonderful memories we've had during our high school days. As I have this conversation with him, I realized that somehow, he's a sensible person. I must admit we were not "close" back then and yet, we talked like we've known each other very well. We were classmates only in first year but I never had such conversation with him before, though we were also busmates (their house is just 3 blocks adjacent to ours).

When I got my phone to check who texted, I saw Gabo's msg: Nand2 kb dla ngyn? Grad pla ni eyoy haha ngyn ko lng nlman. Wla akng mktang kbatch ntn d2. When I read his message, I just thought, Magkapatid ba talaga 'tong si Gabo at Eyoy? I sent him a reply and a bit later, he was sitting next to Kane. When I looked around, a few feet away from us, I saw Par and Maple mingling with the other undergrads and alumni. I waved at them to join us in our seats. Trivia: Par has attended the succeeding Commencement Exercises since we graduated from highschool. That is because she has friends from different batches, be it higher or lower years. :D

2200H

The entire ceremony ended at around 10:00pm where most of the guests are obviously restless because of hunger. Good thing my parents already anticipated this (a lesson learned from their experience during my graduation haha) so 2 weeks before, they have already made reservations in Max's Restaurant just across the school. Sir Leomar, Ma'am Ruth, Sir George, Ma'am Thess (and her hubby, Cloyd), and Sir Al (who didn't show up) were invited to have dinner with us. Good food (though I'm not a fan of Max's fried chicken). Long talks. Hearty laughs. Just a wonderful way of calling it a day.

Congratulations Batch 2007!

Got up from bed early this morning. I was 15 minutes ahead of time (I set the alarm last night at 7:30am). Supposedly, today's the distribution of clearance in Eng'g however, the sked for IE's was moved to April 10 instead. We (Dad, Roi, & me) dropped Mom off in Makati where she'd be meeting with Kuya Louie (candidate donor of kidney for Tita Ed) and Tita Melba. After which, we went to UST and accompanied my brother to the Accounting Office to pay his reservation fee. When we got to the Eng'g bldg., the guards won't let me pass because I was wearing sandals. (?!) Only then that I realized why a lot of students stood infront of the building. (They all looked frustrated. Haha) Most of them were wearing sandals, too. Oh well. I called AJ up and asked him if he could do the errands for me instead. Good thing he's done with his stuff at the Student Center and he's on his way back to the Eng'g bldg. A little later, I saw JC and waved at her. I told her the guards won't let her in because she's wearing sandals; she got upset knowing that she came all the way from Tarlac. Ackk. Then, we saw Abby with the same sentiment as ours. THE EFFIN' GUARDS WON'T LET US IN. Haha. Then came Joyce who was wearing sneakers! Yey. Few moments later, my Dad and brother emerged from the gate of the bldg. saying, "O, ano na?" Haha. I had no choice but to leave and pick Mom up in Makati. I am supposed to meet Lloyd this morning but he won't answer my calls. I thought he was still asleep then I received an SMS from him--he was cornered by his Tito dear. (Oops!)

Tonight's my brother's graduation. Haha I'd love to go & see my 'lil alagas graduate. I'm excited to visit my former school and see my former teachers. Yey. Later!
